Maisha Girls Safe House
The Maisha Girls Safe House mission is incredibly vital, providing a sanctuary for girls and young women who have endured the most harrowing forms of sexual violence and abuse. Founded in 2014 within the slums of Majengo, Pumwani, and surrounding areas in Nairobi, Kenya, the project gained formal recognition in 2015 with the support of well-wishers from Drammen, Norway. The safe house serves as a refuge for those who have faced sexual violations, often at the hands of close relatives or parents. Many of the girls and young women hosted by Maisha have been abandoned after being abused, leaving them without family, support, or protection. The safe house becomes a last resort for many, offering shelter, care, and a chance for healing and rebuilding their lives. This project not only provides safety but also fosters hope and recovery for some of society's most vulnerable. It’s inspiring how the community and international support have come together to sustain this lifeline for survivors of abuse. |
Adopt-A-School
Adopting a school in the midst of a Kenyan slum like Mathare offers a unique opportunity to provide holistic support to children living in extremely challenging conditions. In slum areas, children often face difficult home environments due to poverty, overcrowding, and a lack of basic services. Schools in these areas are more than just places for academic instruction—they serve as safe havens for children whose parents are away working to make ends meet. For many children, school might be the only place where they can access structured activities, consistent meals, emotional support, and a nurturing environment. Through schools, organizations like Ugali Youth can help address more than just educational needs. They can provide nutritious meals, which are essential for the children's physical and cognitive development. Mentoring offers guidance and positive role models, helping these young people navigate the many social and emotional challenges they face. Schools also serve as places where children can build relationships, play, and even pray—helping them develop socially, emotionally, and spiritually. This approach of caring for the whole child is crucial in slum areas like Mathare, where public schools are often under-resourced. With only four public schools serving the entire slum, classrooms are overcrowded, making it difficult for teachers to provide individualized attention. By stepping in to support these schools with resources and mentoring, Ugali Youth play a vital role in helping students succeed despite their difficult surroundings. Investing in these children not only provides them with better educational outcomes but also creates a foundation for their future success and well-being. |
Nuru Centre
Bringing "Nuru," which means "light" in Swahili, to the underprivileged communities like Mathare is about offering hope, opportunity, and a brighter future. For over 20 years, Nuru Centre, under the leadership of Pastor Steve, has been a beacon of hope for children, youth, and parents in Mathare, one of the most impoverished areas in Kenya. The idea of "Nuru" symbolizes illumination, both in terms of providing physical resources like education, meals, and shelter, as well as instilling hope, vision, and the necessary life skills for a better future. By creating a multi-level community hub housing a church, school, training center, and community restaurant, Nuru Centre envisions offering comprehensive support that addresses the spiritual, educational, and economic needs of the community. The long-term dream is not just to alleviate immediate struggles but to empower children and youth to rise above the cycle of poverty, giving them the tools they need to become future leaders in Kenya. Your gift helps realize this dream by supporting 500 children who, through this nurturing environment, can break free from the dire conditions around them and cultivate a vision for a brighter future. The safe classrooms, nutritious meals, and life skills training provide immediate relief, while the long-term goal is to cultivate leadership and resilience in Kenya’s next generation. This act of giving not only helps transform individual lives but also the entire community, shifting it from a place of darkness to one of hope and light. |

Leadership Camp
Why Ugali is preparing leaders of tomorrow through leadership Camps, seminars, training, and other events that equip children and youth with leadership and life skills they need to discover purpose. We know its equally important, and studies show that young people thrive in all aspects of their lives and are buffered from the effects of adversity when they have access to a web of supportive and meaningful relationships. |
Navigate 360@Mentorship Program
Ugali Youth strives to positively mold young minds because young people everywhere benefit immensely from guidance as they grow into adulthood. In many parts of the world, this guidance can come from both formal and informal mentoring, often provided by caring adult role models who help shape their paths. However, in Kenya, many youths face challenging life circumstances that make mentoring especially critical. They frequently lack both physical resources and emotional or social support systems necessary for their development. Ugali Youth aims to fill these gaps by providing not only material resources but also a network of supportive people through its mentoring programs. These programs embody the essence of the Ubuntu philosophy, emphasizing interconnectedness and mutual support. In doing so, Ugali Youth helps foster a sense of belonging and empowerment among young people, nurturing their creativity, confidence, and vision for a better future. It's truly the spirit of Ubuntu in action—uplifting individuals by recognizing that the well-being of one is tied to the well-being of all. |
Project 25 Schools in 2020
Bringing mentoring into 25 schools can truly make a profound impact. As you mentioned, mentoring is key to fostering positive outcomes in multiple areas of young people's lives, particularly in environments where naturally occurring mentors are hard to come by. By embedding mentorship programs into schools, you create a structured way for students to access the guidance and support they need to thrive. Mentors can serve as role models, offering practical advice and emotional support, which helps youth navigate the challenges they face. With the right guidance, they can learn essential life skills such as how to build healthy family relationships, which forms the backbone for personal growth and societal improvement. In Kenya, where many face difficult socio-economic realities, this program could be a game changer. |
Jump Rope Association of Kenya (JRAK)
Jump Rope Association of Kenya (JRAK) is a nonprofit youth-based sports organization located in Nairobi. We are young change agents who use professionalism, physical literacy, and rope-skipping skills to mobilize, harness, and transform youths’ creative potential for both personal and social transformation. Through the art of rope-skipping, we enhance the development of relational, social, emotional, and spiritual intelligence, which is essential for success, especially for children coming from challenging backgrounds. We currently serve 60 jumpers, primarily girls ages 6 to 18. We are seeking $10,000 to fund this program for a year. We rope in students to jump into a better future. |
OUR MISSIONOur hope for the future is that, even as Kenyan youth face the challenges of poverty and await the support they need, they continue to find joy and feel the comforting presence of God in their lives.
